Project overview
This undergraduate research project investigates solar thermal energy collection, fluid circulation, experimental heating systems, and engineering instrumentation.
The research examines how solar radiation can be captured as thermal energy and how heat can be transported and monitored within an experimental system.
Engineering work includes circulation-system development, pump selection, thermal-system integration, temperature measurement, and data acquisition.
The instrumentation system uses Type-K thermocouples and Arduino-based data acquisition to support temperature monitoring and experimental analysis.
The project integrates heat transfer, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, mechanical design, and experimental engineering.
How it works
Sunlight reaches the collector, an aluminium channel under sealed acrylic glazing, and the absorbed heat warms the fluid in contact with it. A pump moves fluid through tubing between the collector and storage so that heat is carried away from the absorber.
Antenna-style Type-K thermocouples sit at equal intervals down the boiler, so temperature can be studied against axial distance. Surface thermocouples at the base are secured with Kapton tape. MAX31855 amplifiers convert the thermocouple signals for an Arduino Mega 2560, and firmware written in C logs temperature against time to a microSD card as CSV.
The apparatus is taken outdoors for field tests of more than three hours in peak sunlight. Two fluid operations are documented: a water-circulation arrangement designed for the collector, and test runs with acetone circulating.
Engineering principles
Interactive 3D model (optional)

A conceptual 3D visualization of the apparatus, built from project photographs and documentation. It is illustrative, not simulation output or measured data, and the pump and storage positions are approximate. Drag to rotate; sound is off unless you enable it. The model downloads only when you press the button.
This browser cannot run the 3D model. The photographs on this page show the same apparatus.
